“Web Applications” can be defined as softwares that deliver services to the community via the Internet, i.e. banks’ online services, online newspapers, and search engines such as Google, Yahoo, etc.
The main kinds of Web Applications are the following:
- Community Portals are applications used for the management of online communities such as internet group discussions.
- Business/Consumer Commerce are solutions that allow for the selling and buying of goods online, i.e. Amazon, Ebay, etc.
- Document & Content Management are solutions that facilitate the management of documents and contents, in such a way that the editors of newspapers and magazines may manage the contents directly via the Internet. These solutions are the ones adopted by magazines published online such as “The Guardian”, “The New York Times”, etc.
- Enterprise Information Portals are solutions designed to provide information about the services, products and activities of the company, i.e. the web site of “Microsoft”.
Enterprise Applications are softwares that are used by companies to manage their processes and activities via Intranet. More precisely, the main kinds of Enterprise Applications are the following:
- CRM (Customer Relationship Management): Systems for the management of relationships with clients, such as
- Help Desk solutions, which give the possibility to the client to call an operator, who fills in a request and dispatches it to the technician in charge.
- Sales automation, which helps the commercial department to realise the offers and their promotions.
- ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). Solutions to manage the goods/resources of the company, for example, to control the contents of a storehouse, keeping track of the items it contains and notifying administrators when stocks are going to be over.
- SCM (Supply Chain Management). Solutions for managing the supplies of the company. These are systems that mechanize the process of making requests to goods requests to suppliers, so that the orders are made automatically depending on the company’s needs.
- CM (Configuration Management). Solutions that keep track of the configuration of the company’s products. For example, an aerospace company that produces satellites will need to know of which exactly the satellites are composed, with all the related documentation.
- HR (Human Resource). Solutions that facilitate staff management, for example keeping track of hours worked, managing holidays and calculating salaries based on overtime hours.
